Here's what I do, and this can apply to not only for guys, but for anyone or any social situation starter in general: just simply make an observation about them like if they're wearing a shirt that has the name of a band you're familiar with and you can ask them if they like that band, or you can complement them on their phone. Simply observe, use your observation as converation which can lead to more topics to talk about, and compliment if you want.
